California LLC at a Glance
Note: California charges an $800 annual franchise tax whatever you earn, including in a loss-making year. The first payment is due by the 15th day of the 4th month after you file. The Statement of Information is $20 every two years. The cost most new owners miss is the separate LLC fee, which is charged on total California income — that is gross receipts, not profit: $900 from $250,000, $2,500 from $500,000, $6,000 from $1,000,000 and $11,790 from $5,000,000. A salon turning over $260,000 and making very little therefore still owes $800 plus $900.
