Introduction — The Repair Was the Thing That Could Not Be Undone

A repair that succeeded structurally, in a place where the correct answer was to decline.

The booking was straightforward. A stone chip, a driveway, twenty-five minutes.

Tam had been doing this for about five months and was, by any reasonable measure, getting good at it. The mechanical part of the job — cleaning, seating the bridge, cycling vacuum and pressure, watching the legs fill, curing, scraping, polishing — had stopped being difficult somewhere around the fortieth repair. Tam could produce a fill that was tight, clear and structurally sound on most of what arrived.

The chip on that Tuesday was a star break. Not a small one. It sat about a hand's width from the base of the glass on the driver's side, which put its outer legs into the area the driver actually looks through, and it was a fraction larger than the limit Tam had written down in month one and had been quietly relaxing ever since.

The car had also been parked outside, uncovered, through two days of rain.

Tam looked at it for about forty seconds and decided it was probably fine.


What "probably fine" turned out to mean

The repair worked. That is the part people find hard to follow.

The legs filled. The break stopped. Structurally, that windshield was stronger afterwards than before, and in the two years since, the damage has not moved a millimetre. By the test that the trade's own literature is mostly concerned with, it was a success.

But the moisture that had been sitting in the break for two days did not all come out, and the resin cured around what was left. And a star break with long legs, filled imperfectly, in laminated glass, in the position that one was in, produces something specific: a small area of the windshield that no longer behaves optically like the rest of it.

Not a hole. Not an obvious scar. A faint, slightly milky patch with fine radial lines, about the size of a thumbnail, which in ordinary daylight the driver could barely see.

At night, with oncoming headlights, it flared.


The conversation

The customer rang eleven days later. They were not angry — that came a bit later — they were confused, because they had been told the chip would be repaired and it had been, and yet something was now wrong that had not been wrong before.

"It's like there's a smudge I can't wipe off. And when a car comes the other way it sort of starbursts. It's right where I look."

Tam went back out, sat in the driver's seat, and looked through it.

From the technician's position outside the car, standing up, looking down at the glass, the repair was acceptable. From the driver's seat, at driver's eye height, looking forward down the road, it was directly in the way.

That is not a subtle difference and Tam had never once, in five months, sat in the driver's seat to check.

Tam offered to have another go at it. There is nothing to have another go at. The resin is in the glass and it is cured. The pit could be re-polished — Tam did, twice, achieving nothing, because the problem was not on the surface.

The only remedy available to that customer, for a chip that had cost them a modest amount to repair, was a complete windshield replacement.


The part that Tam has never got over

The customer had comprehensive insurance.

Before Tam arrived, that windshield had two possible futures. It could be repaired — which is cheap, quick, keeps the factory glass and the factory seal, and which insurers actively prefer. Or, if the damage was not suitable for repair, it could be replaced.

Tam's job, on that driveway, was to decide which of those two futures the windshield was going to have.

Tam had not failed to repair the chip. Tam had repaired it — successfully, structurally, permanently — in a situation where the correct answer was to decline. And the repair was the thing that could not be undone.

Everything about the forty seconds Tam spent looking at that chip is the subject of this book. Not the injection. Not the resin. Not the equipment. The forty seconds.


Why this trade is shaped differently

Take almost any other repair trade and the shape is the same: the customer describes a problem, you diagnose it, you fix it, and if the fix does not work you try something else. Diagnosis is a preliminary. Skill lives in the doing. Errors are usually recoverable.

Now look at what happens here.

The work is irreversible. Resin injected into laminated glass and cured under ultraviolet light is a permanent part of that windshield. There is no solvent, no reversal, no second attempt at the same damage. Whatever you produce is what that driver has, for as long as they own the vehicle.

The customer cannot evaluate the decision, and frequently cannot evaluate the result either. They do not know what damage is repairable. They do not know that a repair leaves a mark. They asked for their chip to be fixed, which is not a thing that exists — what exists is a chip that is either suitable for repair or is not.

And the alternative option is destroyed by the attempt. Before you inject, a windshield can be repaired or replaced. Afterwards, the repair has happened. Whatever conversation about replacement might have taken place has been overtaken by an event you caused.

In most trades, a wrong decision produces a repair that fails and then gets done properly. In this one, a wrong decision produces a repair that succeeds and cannot be undone.

That is the structural fact this book is built on, and it puts the assessment where the skill is.


The second thing that went wrong that day

There is a commercial lesson in that Tuesday too, and it has nothing to do with resin.

Tam drove twenty-two minutes each way for that job. Setting up in the driveway, positioning for shade, waiting for the glass to come down to a workable temperature, doing the repair, finishing, cleaning up and taking payment came to about fifty-five minutes on site. Then, that evening, the write-up.

Call it an hour and three quarters of Tam's day, for one chip.

Two streets away, on the same morning, there was a small builders' merchant with nine vans in the yard. Tam did not know that, because Tam had never thought to look, because Tam was in the business of repairing chips rather than in the business of visiting sites.

The second windshield at the same location costs almost nothing to reach. The first one carries the entire journey. Every economic problem in this trade is a version of that sentence.

A technician doing one vehicle per stop and a technician doing four are not running the same business at different scales. They are running different businesses, and only one of them works.


What this book does with those two facts

Because the work is irreversible, the assessment comes first, runs in a fixed order, and produces a recorded decision before anything is touched. Chapter 19 is the order. Chapter 20 is the eligibility decision in detail. Chapter 5 is the rule they both come from.

Because a repair has two independent failure criteria, Chapter 6 separates them — structural and optical — and Chapter 24 inspects against both, separately, with one of the inspections carried out from the driver's seat. Which is where Tam should have been sitting.

Because a chip repair is never invisible and customers expect invisibility, Chapter 7 makes describing the outcome part of the job rather than part of the apology, and Chapter 18.7 gets it agreed rather than announced.

Because the glass sets the conditions, Chapter 8 covers temperature, moisture, contamination and cure, and Chapter 21 deals with the specific fault that ended Tam's Tuesday: water in the break that did not all come out.

And because the first windshield carries the journey, the money chapters are built around units per stop rather than jobs per day, and the growth chapters are about fleets, dealerships, employers and yards rather than about individual drivers.


What it will not give you

It will not give you a maximum repairable size, a minimum edge distance, a definition of the driver's critical vision area in numbers, a cure time, a temperature range or a resin specification.

Those come from your resin manufacturer, your equipment manufacturer, and whatever standard or code of practice applies where you work — and they differ. Chapter 37.3 explains at length why an AI system is a uniquely bad place to look for any of them, and why this is more dangerous here than in most trades.

It will not tell you what any insurance policy covers or what happens to a claim, because it does not know and neither does anything you can ask. Section 28.6 draws that line precisely and it is narrower than most people in this trade behave as though it is.

It quotes no prices. Every figure is in U.S. dollars and every one is blank.

And it promises no living. Chapter 36.9 exists because some people will do this properly and find their area does not have the site volume to support it.


Where to start

Not with a kit.

Start with Chapter 14, which has three items that stop work until they are answered in writing — one of which is whether you are covered for damage to a vehicle in your care, and another of which concerns the cameras now mounted behind a large proportion of windshields.

Then Chapter 17, and get some scrap glass. Not a customer's windshield. Scrap glass, deliberately damaged, repaired badly on purpose so that you learn what a bad result looks like before you produce one for somebody who has to live with it.

Then Chapters 19 and 20, and print the cards.

Your first repairs should take three times as long as the video suggested. That is correct. The speed comes later, and the technicians who get fast first become fast at making permanent decisions in forty seconds.


Tam paid for that windshield replacement. It cost several times what the repair had earned, and Tam has never regretted paying it.

The thing that changed permanently, though, was not the money. It was that Tam now sits in the driver's seat and looks forward down the road before deciding whether to repair anything — because the question was never "can I fill this?"

The question is "if I fill this, what will this person see every day for the next six years?"

Chapter 1 — Why Windshield-Chip Repair Works as a Side Hustle

A trade that exists because a very small failure reliably becomes a very large expense.

1.1 A trade that exists because a small failure becomes an expensive one

Almost every trade exists because something breaks. This one exists because of something more specific: a very small piece of damage, left alone, reliably becomes a very large expense.

A stone chip in a windshield is, on the day it happens, a blemish a few millimetres across. It is not dangerous. It does not stop the vehicle. Most drivers notice it, are mildly annoyed, and do nothing.

Then it spreads. Not always, not immediately, but often enough that the trade has a business model. Temperature changes flex the glass. A pothole flexes the body. A cold morning meets a hot demister. Somewhere in that sequence the chip develops a leg, the leg becomes a crack, the crack runs, and a windshield that could have been repaired for a modest sum now needs replacing for a great deal more.

The whole commercial proposition of this trade is the difference between those two numbers, and the window of time in which the cheaper option is still available.

That produces a set of conditions that are unusually favourable for a small operator.

The customer's alternative is expensive. Not slightly — substantially. That makes the value obvious without any selling.

There is a deadline the customer did not set. Damage gets worse. Urgency is genuine rather than manufactured, which is rare and which you must be careful not to abuse — Section 4.7.

The insurer frequently prefers the repair. Section 2.6. In many markets a repair is treated more favourably than a replacement, because it costs the insurer far less. That produces a demand structure where the person paying is not always the person driving.

And the damage is extremely common. Every road that carries loose material produces chips. Every fleet of vehicles doing high mileage accumulates them continuously.

What it does not produce is a high-value job. A single chip repair is a small transaction. That is the constraint the whole of Chapter 8 and Chapter 32 exist to solve.

1.2 What the customer is actually buying

They believe they are buying an invisible repair. They are not, and this misunderstanding is the single largest source of dispute in the trade.

What they are actually buying is two things, and it is worth separating them because they are judged differently.

A decision. Whether this damage should be repaired at all, made by somebody competent to make it. This is the part with real value and it is the part they do not know they are receiving. Section 2.9.

A structural intervention. Resin filling the break, bonding the fractured surfaces, restoring a meaningful proportion of the glass's strength in that area and stopping the damage spreading.

What they are not buying is invisibility. A chip repair improves appearance, usually considerably. It does not erase the damage. There will be something visible where the chip was, in most cases, on most damage.

Every customer who has not been told this expects the mark to disappear. Rule 3 exists because that expectation must be corrected before the work, and cannot be corrected afterwards.

Why this matters for how you sell

If you sell "we fix chips," you have sold invisibility by implication and you will spend your career in disappointing conversations.

If you sell "I'll tell you whether this can be repaired, and if it can, I'll stop it spreading and improve how it looks" — you have sold what you actually deliver, and Chapter 7 gives you the words.

Why it matters for pricing

A customer who thinks they are buying a cosmetic fix judges the price against how good it looks. A customer who understands they are buying a structural repair and an expert decision judges it against the cost of a replacement — which is a far more favourable comparison, and an honest one.

1.3 Who needs this, and why they cannot do it themselves

Consumer repair kits exist, they are inexpensive, and they are widely sold. It is worth being clear about why they have not eliminated this trade, because the answer is not simply that professional equipment is better.

They cannot make the decision. A kit contains no judgement. The person using it has no basis for deciding whether their damage is suitable, and the instructions cannot supply one because eligibility depends on type, size, position, depth, age and contamination — Chapter 20. Somebody working from a leaflet will attempt damage that should have been replaced.

And because the work is irreversible, a consumer attempt on unsuitable damage does not merely fail. It permanently removes the option of a proper repair and frequently makes the appearance worse.

They cannot control the conditions. Chapter 8. Glass temperature, moisture and contamination decide the outcome, and none of them are addressed by a kit.

They cannot achieve a proper vacuum. Removing air from the break before introducing resin is the part that separates a fill from a smear, and it is the part consumer equipment does worst.

And they only do it once. There is no learning curve. The first attempt is the only attempt, on their own vehicle, on damage in front of their own eyes.

The customer types this produces

The individual driver. One vehicle, one chip, reactive, found through search. The lowest-value customer type and the one most new operators build their whole business on — Section 32.4 explains why that is a mistake.

The fleet. Multiple vehicles at one location, high mileage, continuous chip generation, and a manager whose interest is downtime and cost rather than appearance. ⚠ The best customer type in this trade by a wide margin, for reasons that are entirely about Section 1.4's economics rather than about the work.

The dealership. Vehicles being prepared for sale, where a chip is an obstacle to a transaction. Predictable, repeat, and they care about turnaround.

The property manager or employer. Not their vehicles, but their car park, and a service they can offer residents or staff at no cost to themselves.

And the insurer or glass company subcontract. Work referred to you. Steady, lower-margin, and it comes with somebody else's paperwork requirements — Section 3.4.

1.4 What it costs to start, honestly

Genuinely low by trade standards, and lower than most people expect.

The core equipment is a repair system — a bridge, an injector, and the tooling around it — plus resins, curing equipment and consumables. There is no large capital item. There is no vehicle lift, no premises requirement, no expensive diagnostic equipment.

Chapter 13 sets this out in three tiers with a worksheet. The shape:

Tier one — what you cannot start without. A repair system, the resins the system's manufacturer specifies, curing equipment, cleaning and drying equipment, the probes and finishing tools, magnification and lighting, and insurance.

Tier two — what makes the work faster and better. Better lighting, a shade solution, a second resin type, moisture removal, and improvements to whatever you found frustrating in the first hundred jobs.

Tier three — what you buy only after the work proves itself. Long-crack equipment, a second full system, a fixed location, vehicle fit-out.

The genuinely important cost is not equipment. It is insurance — and specifically whether you are covered for damage to a customer's vehicle while it is in your care, which is a separate question from whether you are covered for your work. Section 14.4.

The second genuinely important cost is the one nobody budgets: the practice glass and the resin you will use up learning. Chapter 17 requires you to repair damage on glass that is not a customer's, several times, including deliberately badly. That consumes resin, which is not cheap, and it produces no revenue. Budget for it — Section 13.8 — because a technician who skipped it is learning on windshields instead.

Every figure in this book is in U.S. dollars and every figure is blank.

1.5 The hours it fits into, and the hours it does not

It fits daylight. This is the significant constraint and it is not negotiable in the way it might be in another trade. Ultraviolet cure, working temperature, and the ability to see what you are actually doing all depend on light — Chapter 8. A trade that can only be done well in daylight is a trade with a shorter working day in winter than in summer, and Section 12.8 puts that in the plan.

It fits weekdays better than weekends for the best customers. Fleets are at their yards on weekdays. Dealerships operate on weekdays. Individual drivers are available at weekends. Those pull in opposite directions and Section 32.3 addresses it.

Individual jobs are short. Twenty-five to forty minutes of actual work on straightforward damage. That sounds like it should fit anywhere and Section 1.7 explains why it does not.

It fits somebody with a vehicle and flexible hours.

The hours it does not fit

It does not fit an unreliable schedule. Fleet and dealership work is booked and expected.

It does not fit poor weather. Rain stops work, cold slows it, and a chip that has been rained into is a chip that may no longer be repairable — Section 8.3. A business planned on twelve equal months will be disappointed.

It does not fit somebody who wants to work quickly above all. The cure cannot be hurried, the assessment must not be, and the trade punishes speed in a way that is permanent.

And it does not fit anybody who cannot decline work. Chapter 9. Every declined job is money not earned, and every wrongly-accepted job is a permanent mark in somebody's field of view.

1.6 What makes somebody good at it

Judgement, first and by a wide margin. The technical skill in this trade has a fairly low ceiling and most people reach an adequate level within a few dozen repairs. The judgement — what to repair, what to decline, what result to promise — has no ceiling at all and is what separates practitioners.

The willingness to look properly. Forty seconds of looking is not an assessment. Chapter 19's order takes five minutes and it is five minutes that decide everything.

Patience during the cycle. Filling the legs of a star break is a slow process that rewards waiting and punishes hurrying — Section 22.4. Somebody temperamentally unable to wait will produce incomplete fills for a career.

Comfort with a disappointing conversation. "I'm not going to repair this" is a sentence you will say regularly, and "this will not be invisible" is a sentence you will say every single time. Both are learnable — Chapter 5.7 and Chapter 7.5 — and both are skills rather than personality traits.

Honesty about your own results. Section 24.7. A technician who cannot look at their own repair and say "that is not good enough" will never improve, because there is no external feedback in this trade — the customer drives away and the mark stays.

And a tolerance for the boring parts. Photographs, records, documentation. This trade needs more of them than most, for reasons in Chapter 25.

1.7 The thing that makes this different from every other repair trade

Two things, and they compound.

One — the work is irreversible.

Almost every repair trade permits iteration. A mechanic fits a part; if it does not solve the problem, they fit a different one. A decorator paints; if the colour is wrong, they repaint. A plumber's failed joint gets remade. The universal shape is: attempt, evaluate, correct.

Here there is no correction. Resin injected into laminated glass and cured is a permanent constituent of that windshield. There is no solvent, no reversal, and no second attempt at the same damage.

You do not get to find out whether it was the right decision and then act on the answer. The decision and the irreversible act are the same event.

Two — the attempt destroys the alternative.

Before you inject, a damaged windshield has two possible futures: repair, or replacement. Your job is to decide which.

After you inject, one of those futures has happened. If it was the wrong one, the customer's remaining option is a replacement they could have had without the intervening blemish — and, depending on their circumstances, a conversation with their insurer that is now more complicated than it would have been.

In most trades, a wrong decision produces a repair that fails and then gets done properly. In this one, a wrong decision produces a repair that succeeds and cannot be undone.

Put those two together and the entire weight of the trade moves to the assessment. That is why Part Three opens with two full chapters on looking at damage before a single chapter on injecting resin into it, and why the front matter says the assessment is the trade and the injection is the easy part.

1.8 What you are risking every time you inject resin

Be unsentimental about this once, at the start.

You are permanently altering a safety component. A windshield is bonded structure. It contributes to the vehicle's rigidity, and on many vehicles it is what the passenger airbag deploys against — Section 2.2. You are not working on a window.

You are permanently altering the thing a driver looks through, at speed, in traffic, at night, in rain. A blemish in the wrong position is not a cosmetic complaint. It is a permanent feature of that person's forward view in the conditions where seeing clearly matters most.

And you are consuming an option that belonged to them. Section 1.7.

This is not written to frighten anybody. The overwhelming majority of chip repairs are entirely routine, produce good results, and leave the customer better off than they were. It is written because the standard of care has to be set by the worst plausible outcome, and the worst plausible outcome here is somebody driving for years with a permanent distortion in their sight line that you put there.

Practically, three consequences.

The assessment is not negotiable. Not when you are late, not when it is obvious, not when the customer is watching, not on the ninetieth chip of the week.

The record is not optional. Chapter 25. Photographs before and after, the eligibility decision, and the agreed outcome. This trade needs documentation more than most because the evidence of what the damage was disappears the moment you repair it.

And declining must be genuinely available to you. A technician who cannot afford to decline will not decline. Section 30.4's reserve is a safety control for exactly this reason.

1.9 Who should not do this work

Somebody who cannot afford to turn work away. Financial pressure and irreversible decisions are a bad combination, and this trade offers a constant supply of marginal chips that would be fine, probably.

Somebody who wants to work fast. There is a floor under the assessment and a floor under the cure, and neither moves.

Somebody unwilling to photograph and record. Chapter 25. If documentation feels like an imposition, this trade will punish that specifically, because the thing you are documenting ceases to exist the moment you work on it.

Somebody who cannot say "this will not be invisible" every single time. Not most times. Every time, at intake, before the work — Chapter 7.

Somebody who will not sit in the driver's seat. It sounds trivial and it is the difference between Tam's Tuesday and a competent assessment — Section 6.4.

And somebody who cannot look up a limit rather than remembering one. This book prints none, deliberately, and the trade requires you to work to your resin manufacturer's, your equipment manufacturer's and your jurisdiction's figures — repeatedly, for years.

1.10 Chapter summary

The trade exists because a very small piece of damage reliably becomes a very large expense, and the whole commercial proposition is the gap between those two numbers and the window in which the cheaper option remains available.

The customer believes they are buying an invisible repair. They are buying a decision about whether repair is appropriate, and a structural intervention that stops the damage spreading and improves the appearance without erasing it.

Consumer kits have not eliminated the trade, and the reason is not equipment quality — it is that a kit contains no judgement, cannot control conditions, cannot achieve a proper vacuum, and gets exactly one attempt.

Startup cost is genuinely low, the largest and most-missed item is insurance for a vehicle in your care, and the cost nobody budgets is the practice glass and resin consumed learning on something that is not a customer's windshield.

The work fits daylight, fits weekdays for the best customers, and does not fit poor weather, an unreliable schedule, a preference for speed, or an inability to decline.

What makes somebody good at it is judgement rather than technique, because the technical ceiling is low and the judgement ceiling is not.

What makes it structurally different from every other repair trade is that the work is irreversible and the attempt destroys the alternative — so a wrong decision here does not produce a failed repair that then gets done properly; it produces a successful repair that cannot be undone.

Every injection permanently alters a safety component and permanently alters what a driver looks through, which sets the standard of care regardless of how routine the individual job is.


Realistic scenario

Tam's third month. A Saturday, four bookings, all individual drivers found through search.

Job one, nine in the morning. Twenty-eight minutes of driving. A clean bullseye, low on the passenger side, well away from anything. Textbook. Twenty minutes of work, an excellent result, a delighted customer.

Job two, eleven. Nineteen minutes of driving. A combination break that Tam assesses properly, decides is marginal on position, and repairs anyway because the customer is standing there and it is a Saturday. The result is acceptable and Tam is not entirely comfortable with it.

Job three, one o'clock. Thirty-four minutes of driving, because it is on the other side of town and Tam took it when it was the only booking that day. The chip has been rained on for a week. Tam dries it as well as the equipment allows, repairs it, and the fill is cloudy. The customer says it is fine. Tam knows it is not.

Job four, three. Twenty-two minutes of driving. Cancelled on arrival — the customer forgot and is out.

Tam gets home at half past four having left at half past eight.

Three repairs. Eight hours. Around three and a half hours of driving. One wasted journey. Two results Tam is not proud of, both of which are permanent, both of which were accepted because declining would have meant a longer drive home with less money.

The two marginal decisions were not made because Tam did not know better. They were made because the day's economics did not permit a refusal, and the day's economics were a consequence of doing one vehicle per stop.

That is the connection this book keeps returning to and it is worth seeing early: Rule 4's money problem produces Rule 1's safety problem. A technician who needs every job on the list to be a yes is a technician whose assessment is compromised before they arrive.

Eight months later Tam does a Tuesday morning at a plant hire depot: eleven vehicles, one journey, seven chips repaired, two declined and referred for replacement, two assessed as not currently worth doing and recorded for the next visit.

The two declines cost Tam nothing at all, because there were nine other windshields in the yard.

It must be sayable in under sixty seconds without sounding rehearsed or defensive, and it must leave the customer feeling well informed rather than sold something inferior. Give me three versions: one for an individual driver who has never had this done; one for a fleet manager who has; and one for somebody who has clearly already decided they want it to look like new."

Prompt 4 — Available Hours and Realistic Capacity

"Help me work out realistic weekly capacity for a windshield-chip repair side hustle. Ask me: my available windows by day and their length; whether I will work mobile, from a fixed location, or on sites; my likely travel time between jobs; how long I currently take on a straightforward repair; and my daylight hours in the darkest month. Then produce an honest weekly capacity figure that separates hands-on repair time from travel from setup and conditioning time from administration, and shows all four. Account explicitly for the fact that this trade depends on daylight and on workable glass temperature, so winter capacity is lower than summer. Apply an explicit inexperience factor and state what factor you applied. Then show me the same calculation for a day spent at a single site with multiple vehicles, so I can compare the two directly. Present it as a table plus three sentences of plain commentary."

One — did it give you a repair limit? If any output above stated a maximum repairable size, a minimum edge distance, a temperature range or a cure time, discard that part entirely. This book prints none and neither should any AI output you rely on — Section 37.3.

Two — did it invent a statistic or a business? Market sizing and named local firms are the two places these outputs produce confident fiction. Verify anything named before acting on it.

Three — is the capacity figure honest about daylight and conditioning? A capacity calculation that treats this as a twenty-five-minute job with no setup, no glass conditioning and no seasonal variation is wrong by a large factor.

Four — did the outcome explanation soften the key sentence? It must say the damage will still be visible. If the output hedged that into "greatly improved appearance" without the plain statement, it has recreated exactly the expectation gap that Rule 3 exists to close.


Do This Now

1. Write down, in one sentence, what you believe you are selling. If the word "invisible" or "like new" appears anywhere in it, rewrite it now.

2. Drive around your area for an afternoon and count vehicles that sit still in groups. Yards, depots, dealerships, employer car parks. That map is worth more than anything in Chapter 11.

3. Say the Prompt 3 explanation out loud five times. You will say it before every job for the rest of your career and the first time should not be to a paying customer.

4. Answer honestly, on paper, the financial-pressure question from Prompt 2. If you could not comfortably decline a job next Saturday, that is a prerequisite rather than an aspiration — and Section 30.4 is the fix.

5. Contact one insurer this week and ask the Section 14.4 question: are you covered for damage to a customer's vehicle while it is in your care? Do not buy anything yet. Just find out what the answer sounds like.
