Almost every trade has to explain its value. This one does not.

You clean half a driveway, step back, and the customer sees it. There is a line down the middle of their concrete showing exactly what they have been living with. No brochure, no pitch, no before-and-after gallery required — the work argues for itself, in real time, on their property.

That single fact shapes everything about this business: how you market it, how you sell it, and why the results-driven customer is easier to find here than in almost any other side hustle.


Why Exterior Surfaces Need Cleaning, Repeatedly

Four things accumulate on outdoor surfaces, everywhere, continuously:

Organic growth. Algae, mildew, moss, and lichen grow on anything that stays damp — north-facing siding, shaded concrete, fences, roofs. In humid regions this is a year-round process.

Atmospheric soiling. Dust, pollen, exhaust, and airborne grime settle and bond.

Traffic and use. Driveways collect oil and tire marks. Sidewalks collect gum and foot traffic. Dumpster pads collect exactly what you would expect.

Weathering. Rain splash, sprinkler overspray, and rust from irrigation water leave marks that do not wash off with a hose.

None of that is optional and none of it stops. Which means this is a recurring service — a property cleaned this year will need it again, and the customer now knows what clean looks like.


Why the Results Sell Themselves

The commercial advantage of this trade is visual and immediate.

  • The half-and-half shot is the most persuasive sales tool in home services. Half clean, half not, same photo, same lighting, no editing required.
  • Neighbors see it. A clean driveway on a street of dirty ones generates inquiries without any marketing.
  • The customer sees the result while you are still there, which makes the walkthrough, the referral ask, and the recurring-service offer all far easier.

The corresponding risk: the results are equally visible when something goes wrong. Etched concrete, striped siding, and furred wood are permanent and public. Chapter 10 exists for exactly this reason, and it is the most important chapter in the book.


Four Different Things People Call the Same Thing

This confusion causes real damage, so let us be precise.

Why this matters commercially and physically:

A customer says "pressure wash my house." If you actually pressure wash their vinyl siding, you can drive water behind it, break seals, streak it permanently, and strip paint from trim.

House washing is a soft-wash job. Siding is cleaned with low pressure and appropriate solution, not force. Getting this distinction wrong is the single most common way beginners cause expensive damage.

Say it out loud to customers: "I'll be soft washing the siding — low pressure and a cleaning solution. High pressure damages siding, so nobody should be blasting your house." That sentence makes you sound like a professional and it happens to be true.


Starting With Two Services Instead of Twenty

Chapter 2 lists more than twenty possible services. You should start with two or three.

THE THREE THAT WORK BEST TO START

1. DRIVEWAY AND FLATWORK CLEANING
   Concrete driveways, sidewalks, patios, walkways.
   Lowest damage risk on a properly identified surface.
   Highest visual impact. Easiest to estimate.
   A surface cleaner makes it fast.

2. FENCE CLEANING
   Straightforward, linear, easy to measure and price.
   ⚠ Wood requires care — see Chapter 10.

3. HOUSE WASHING (SOFT WASH)
   Higher ticket, strong demand.
   ⚠ Requires understanding soft-wash method, chemistry,
     plant protection, and siding types. Learn this
     deliberately, not on your first weekend.

What to leave alone at first: roofs, anything requiring a ladder, hot-water work, fleet washing, graffiti removal, and anything with wastewater recovery requirements. Chapter 2 explains each.


The Honest Physical and Safety Demands

This trade is less physically brutal than landscaping and more hazardous in specific ways.

The physical reality:

  • Long hours standing and walking on wet, hard surfaces
  • Dragging hose — a lot of hose, often uphill
  • Setup and breakdown consume real time on every job
  • Repetitive wand work is hard on shoulders, wrists, and back
  • You will be wet, and in summer you will be wet and hot

The hazards that matter:

⚠ PRESSURE-INJECTION INJURY
  A pressure washer can force water and contaminants
  through skin. The entry wound can look trivial — a
  small mark — while serious tissue damage occurs
  beneath. This is a MEDICAL EMERGENCY requiring
  immediate professional attention, and it must be
  described to medical staff as a high-pressure
  injection injury. Chapter 20.

⚠ ELECTRICAL HAZARDS
  Water, extension cords, outdoor outlets, light
  fixtures, and panels. Chapter 20.

⚠ FALLS
  Ladders and roofs are where the serious injuries in
  this trade happen. This book treats all height work
  as a separate category and tells beginners to avoid
  it.

⚠ CHEMICALS
  Never mixed, always per label, always with the
  specified PPE. Chapter 9.

⚠ SLIPS
  Wet surfaces, hose across walkways, and soap residue.

Be honest with yourself before you build a business around it. If shoulder or back problems are already a concern, the wand work will find them.

The freezing problem is specific and serious. Water in a pump, hose, or gun that freezes will destroy equipment. Chapter 7 covers winterization; Chapter 17 covers scheduling around it.

In mild climates this is close to a year-round business. In cold climates it is a seven-to-nine-month season and you must plan for the off-season.

Neither is better. A solo operator with tight routing, correct pricing, and a few recurring commercial accounts can out-earn a poorly run multi-rig company.


How AI Helps a Small Operator Look Organized

1. Proposals that look established. A written estimate naming each surface, the method, the exclusions, and realistic expectations — delivered the same day — beats a number on a business card.

2. It handles the arithmetic. Square footage, coverage rates, job costing. You supply the measurements; it does the math and shows its work, and you check it.

3. It gives back your evenings. After a full washing day you still owe two estimates and six messages. That is when people quit.

4. It removes the blank page. The restaurant manager never gets the email because you did not know how to start it.

What none of these show: the rained-out weekend, the season you get twenty jobs instead of sixty-eight, the pump that fails in July, the customer who does not pay, or a damage claim. Plan for those.


What This Book Will Not Promise You

Not customers, not income, not success. Some people build genuinely good businesses here. Many earn a useful few hundred dollars a weekend. Some discover they dislike being wet for eight hours.

What this book will do is remove the excuses and, more importantly, keep you from destroying someone's siding in week two.


A Real Situation

Cal bought a consumer pressure washer and a small surface cleaner and took a driveway job for $180.

It took him five and a half hours. The machine's flow rate was low, the surface cleaner kept stalling because it was starved for water, and he ended up finishing the edges with a wand at a distance that left visible stripes across the concrete.

The customer paid. They did not call back, and Cal noticed the stripes every time he drove past.

He did three things.

First, he learned the difference between PSI and GPM. His machine had respectable pressure and very low flow — and flow is what moves dirt off a surface and what a surface cleaner requires. Be clear about what you are confident in and what I must verify locally.
Do not estimate my income. Do not state local wastewater rules or water
restrictions — tell me who to ask.

Prompt 2 — Startup budget skeleton

Build a startup budget checklist for a part-time pressure-washing business.

My situation: I own [EQUIPMENT], I drive a [VEHICLE], my budget is
$[AMOUNT], and I plan to offer [SERVICES] in [CITY, STATE].

Organize into: must have before the first job, first month, after ten jobs,
and should rent rather than buy at first.

For each item, describe what it is and why it matters. Leave dollar amounts
blank — do not guess prices.

⚠ Do not state equipment specifications, PSI or GPM figures, or chemical
products. I will get those from manufacturers and suppliers.

Prompt 3 — Understanding the four methods

Explain the practical differences between pressure washing, power washing,
soft washing, and exterior cleaning, in plain language, for a beginner in
the United States.

For each: what it means, what kind of work it suits, what equipment it
generally requires, and what the risk is of using the wrong method.

Then explain specifically why house siding is a soft-wash job and what
happens when someone uses high pressure on siding instead.

Then give me a short script for explaining this to a customer who says
"pressure wash my house," so I sound professional rather than pedantic.

⚠ Do not name chemical products or give any mixing, dilution, or dwell-time
information. Do not state pressure figures for specific surfaces — I will
confirm those with manufacturers and by testing.

Common Mistakes

Buying on PSI alone. Flow moves dirt and runs a surface cleaner. Chapter 8.

Pressure washing siding. The single most common way beginners cause expensive damage.

Quoting before inspecting. You cannot see substrate, existing damage, water supply, or runoff paths in a photo.

Not counting setup and breakdown. They are a large share of every job.

Ignoring wastewater rules. They exist, they vary, and nobody researches them until there is a problem.

Skipping the test area. Two minutes prevents most damage claims.

Getting chemical advice from anywhere but the label and the SDS. Including from an AI tool.

Working near ladders and roofs in month one. Falls are the serious injuries in this trade.

Treating a pressure-injection wound as minor. It is a medical emergency.


Safety and Professional Considerations

Pressure-injection injuries can look like a small puncture and cause severe damage beneath the skin. Seek immediate professional medical attention and describe it explicitly as a high-pressure injection injury. Do not "wait and see."

Never point a wand at yourself or anyone else, never use one to clean clothing or skin, and never disable a trigger safety.

Water and electricity. Assume outdoor outlets, fixtures, and panels are live. Cover or avoid them, and never spray directly into them.

Test before you commit. An inconspicuous test area, on every unfamiliar surface, every time.

Read the label and the safety data sheet for every product, use exactly the PPE specified, and never mix products.

Do not work at height in your first season. Roofs and ladders are a different risk category with different training and insurance requirements.

Confirm your insurance covers what you actually do, including surface damage and any pollution-related exposure. Chapter 6.


Do This Now

  1. Write down your honest availability, including whether you can work early mornings for commercial jobs.

  2. Find out your water situation: does your area have restrictions, and can you draw from customer spigots? Call your water utility.

  3. Look up your local wastewater and storm-drain rules — or at minimum, find out who to ask. Chapter 21.

  4. Learn the PSI/GPM distinction before you buy anything. Chapter 8.

  5. Run Prompt 1 and save the answer.

  6. Pick two services to start with. Chapter 2 will test the choice.

  7. Practice on your own concrete before you charge anyone.

Chapter 1: Understanding Pressure Washing, Power Washing, and Soft Washing

PSI, GPM and cleaning units in plain language, nozzles and downstream injection, dwell time, surface cleaners, hot versus cold, and what excessive pressure destroys.

Almost every expensive mistake in this trade comes from using the wrong method on a surface.

This chapter gives you the vocabulary and the judgment. It is the foundation for Chapter 8 (how the equipment works) and Chapter 10 (what each surface tolerates).


1.1 The Four Methods and When Each Applies

The single most important sentence in this chapter:

Houses are soft washed. Concrete is pressure washed. Confusing the two is how beginners destroy siding.


1.2 PSI, GPM, and Cleaning Units in Plain Language

PSI (pounds per square inch) measures pressure — the force of the water at the nozzle.

GPM (gallons per minute) measures flow — how much water is moving.

The distinction most beginners get wrong:

  PRESSURE breaks the bond between dirt and the surface.
  FLOW carries the dirt away and covers area.

  A machine with high pressure and low flow will clean a
  small spot aggressively and take forever to cover a
  driveway — and it may not run a surface cleaner at all.

  A machine with moderate pressure and higher flow will
  clean faster over area and is generally safer for
  surfaces.

  ⚠ For production work, FLOW is usually the more
    valuable specification.

Cleaning units is a rough industry shorthand: PSI × GPM. It is useful for quickly comparing two machines, and it is not a complete measure — two machines with identical cleaning units can behave very differently, and a machine's flow determines what attachments it can run.

Do not take specific PSI or GPM figures from this book or from an AI tool. Get them from the manufacturer's specifications for the machine you are actually considering, and match attachments to that machine.


1.3 Nozzles: Degree, Orifice, and What Each Does

Two things define a nozzle: the spray angle and the orifice size.

Spray angle determines how concentrated the water is.

  Narrower angle  → more concentrated force on a smaller
                    area → higher risk of damage
  Wider angle     → force spread over a larger area →
                    gentler, covers more
  Soap/chemical
  nozzle          → very low pressure, used to apply
                    solution

A narrow, high-concentration nozzle is the most dangerous tool in your kit. It will cut wood, etch concrete, strip paint, and injure skin. Many professionals simply do not carry the narrowest option.

Orifice size must match your machine's flow rating.

⚠ THE ORIFICE RULE

  Nozzle orifice size must be matched to your specific
  machine's flow. A nozzle sized for a different machine
  will produce either dangerously high pressure or
  ineffective cleaning, and can damage the pump.

  Get the correct orifice size from your equipment
  manufacturer or a knowledgeable supplier — not from a
  general chart and not from an AI tool.

Practical guidance: use the widest angle that will do the job, at the greatest distance that works, and only step down if necessary — after testing.


1.4 Downstream Injection and Chemical Application

Downstream injection draws cleaning solution into the water stream after the pump, so the chemical never passes through the pump itself.

WHY IT MATTERS
  Running chemicals through a pump damages seals and
  components. Downstream injection protects the machine.

HOW IT AFFECTS APPLICATION
  Downstream injection generally works at LOW pressure —
  you switch to a soap/chemical nozzle to draw solution.
  Switching to a high-pressure nozzle stops the draw.

  This is why applying and rinsing are separate steps
  with different nozzles.

⚠ ALWAYS FLUSH the system with clean water after using
  any chemical, per your equipment manual. Residual
  chemical damages components and can affect the next
  job.

Dedicated soft-wash systems use a separate pump designed for chemical application, with no high-pressure component at all. That is the professional approach for house washing and it is a Chapter 7 equipment decision.


1.5 Dwell Time and Rinsing

Dwell time is how long a cleaning solution stays on a surface before rinsing.

⚠ DWELL TIME COMES FROM THE PRODUCT LABEL.

  Too short: the product has not done its work
  Too long: the product can damage the surface, dry on,
            or stain

  Never guess. Never take a dwell time from a book, a
  video, or an AI tool. It is on the label, and it
  differs by product, dilution, surface, and conditions.

Conditions that change everything:

  • Direct sun and heat dry solutions faster, which can cause streaking and damage. Many operators avoid working a surface in direct sun.
  • Wind causes drift and uneven application.
  • Surface temperature matters as much as air temperature.

Rinsing must be thorough and complete. Residual cleaning solution can damage surfaces, harm plants, and leave visible marks after drying.

Pre-wetting — soaking plants, adjacent surfaces, and sometimes the target surface with clean water before applying solution — is standard practice for protection. Chapter 9.


1.6 Surface Cleaners

A surface cleaner is a shrouded attachment with rotating spray arms that cleans flat surfaces evenly.

WHY IT MATTERS
  ✓ Dramatically faster than a wand on flatwork
  ✓ Even results — no stripes or wand marks
  ✓ Less splash and overspray
  ✓ Less operator fatigue

⚠ IT REQUIRES ADEQUATE FLOW
  A surface cleaner sized beyond your machine's flow will
  stall, clean poorly, and frustrate you. Match the
  surface cleaner to your machine's rated flow — confirm
  with the manufacturer.

⚠ EDGES STILL NEED A WAND
  The shroud cannot reach edges and corners. Those are
  finished by hand, at the SAME distance and angle as
  the machine produces, or the edges will look different
  from the middle. This is where stripes come from.

A surface cleaner is the single highest-value attachment for a flatwork operator and it changes the economics of driveway work completely.


1.7 Hot Water vs. Cold Water

COLD WATER
  Handles most residential cleaning: organic growth,
  general soiling, most flatwork.
  Lower equipment cost, simpler maintenance.

HOT WATER
  Substantially better on grease, oil, gum, and heavy
  commercial soiling.
  ⚠ Significantly higher equipment cost
  ⚠ Fuel consumption and burner maintenance
  ⚠ More that can go wrong
  ⚠ Additional burn hazard

WHEN HOT WATER MAKES SENSE
  Restaurant and commercial grease work
  Dumpster pads and drive-throughs
  Fleet and equipment washing
  Gum removal at scale

  It makes sense when you have contracts requiring it —
  not before.

Heat is one of four cleaning factors (Chapter 8, Section 8.10). Increasing heat can let you decrease pressure, which is often safer for the surface.


1.8 Pressure Loss, Hose Length, and Water Supply

PRESSURE LOSS
  Every foot of hose, every fitting, every elevation
  change reduces pressure at the nozzle. Long runs and
  undersized hose cost you performance.

  ⚠ Use the hose size your machine's manufacturer
    specifies. Undersized hose restricts flow and can
    damage the pump.

WATER SUPPLY — THE LIMITING FACTOR NOBODY CHECKS
  Your machine cannot use more water than the supply
  delivers. A pressure washer starved for water will
  cavitate and destroy its pump.

  ⚠ TEST THE SUPPLY AT EVERY PROPERTY before you start.
    Chapter 12, Section 12.2.

  If the supply is inadequate: a buffer tank between the
  spigot and the machine lets the machine draw from a
  reservoir rather than directly from a weak line. This
  is standard practice for higher-flow machines.

Elevation matters too. Working significantly above the water source or the machine reduces performance.


1.9 Overspray and Runoff

Two things leave the work area whether you plan for them or not.

Overspray is airborne water and solution carried by wind or bounce.

[ ] Vehicles — spotting and chemical damage
[ ] Windows — spotting, and solution entering gaps
[ ] Neighboring property
[ ] People and pets
[ ] Open windows and doors
[ ] Air conditioning units and vents
[ ] Outdoor furniture, grills, and electronics
[ ] Plants

Runoff is the water that leaves the surface after cleaning.

⚠ Runoff carries dirt, organic material, and cleaning
  solution. Where it goes is a legal question in many
  jurisdictions, particularly for commercial work.
  Chapter 21 covers this entirely, and it is research
  most operators never do.

Both are planned before you start, not managed after.


1.10 Why Higher Pressure Is Not Better

THE FOUR CLEANING FACTORS

  1. PRESSURE (mechanical force)
  2. FLOW (volume and rinsing)
  3. HEAT
  4. CHEMISTRY (the right product, correct dwell time)

  These trade off against each other. Increasing
  chemistry, heat, or dwell time lets you decrease
  pressure — which is almost always safer for the
  surface.

  A professional's instinct is: what is the LOWEST
  pressure that will do this job?

  A beginner's instinct is: turn it up.

  That difference is what separates a clean driveway
  from an etched one, and clean siding from streaked
  siding.

The professional standard: use the least aggressive method that achieves the result, at the greatest working distance, with the widest nozzle angle — and step up only after testing.


1.11 What Excessive Pressure Destroys

Each of these is permanent, visible, and expensive.

SIDING
  Vinyl: water driven behind panels into the wall
    cavity; cracked or broken panels; permanent streaking
  Fiber cement: surface damage; forced water at seams
  Wood: furring, splintering, stripped finish
  Metal: dents; stripped coating; forced water at seams

STUCCO AND EIFS
  Surface erosion, gouging, and water intrusion.
  ⚠ EIFS in particular is easily damaged and water
    intrusion can be very expensive.

PAINT AND FINISHES
  Stripped paint, exposed substrate, and a repaint bill

MORTAR AND MASONRY
  Eroded mortar joints, which is a structural and
  water-intrusion problem, not a cosmetic one

CONCRETE
  Etching, striping, exposed aggregate, and permanent
  wand marks

WOOD DECKS AND FENCES
  Furring (raised, fuzzy grain), gouging, splintering,
  and destroyed finish

ROOFING
  Granule loss on asphalt shingles, lifted or broken
  material, water intrusion
  ⚠ This is why roofs are soft washed by trained
    operators, never pressure washed.

WINDOWS AND DOORS
  Broken glass, damaged seals, forced water into the
  building, damaged screens and frames

ELECTRICAL
  Water into fixtures, outlets, panels, and equipment

LANDSCAPING
  Stripped mulch, damaged plants, eroded beds,
  chemical damage

VEHICLES
  Paint damage, forced water into seals, chemical
  spotting

Every item on that list is a claim you do not want. Chapter 10 covers each surface in detail.


1.12 Choosing the Safest Method for a Surface

THE DECISION SEQUENCE — every unfamiliar surface

1. IDENTIFY THE SURFACE
   What is it actually made of? If you cannot tell, ask
   the customer, and if they do not know, treat it as
   the most delicate possibility.

2. IDENTIFY THE SOIL
   Organic growth? Grease? Atmospheric grime? Rust?
   Different soils respond to different approaches.

3. CHOOSE THE GENTLEST METHOD THAT COULD WORK
   Chemistry and dwell time before pressure.
   Soft wash before pressure wash.
   Wide nozzle before narrow.
   Greater distance before closer.

4. TEST AN INCONSPICUOUS AREA
   ⚠ Every time, on every unfamiliar surface. Two
     minutes. Wait for it to dry and check the result
     before proceeding.

5. DOCUMENT EXISTING DAMAGE BEFORE YOU START
   Photograph it. Chapter 12.

6. IF IN DOUBT, DO NOT PROCEED
   "I'm not comfortable cleaning that surface without
    knowing more about it" is a professional answer.
    Refer it out or decline.

The customer conversation that prevents most problems:

"Before I start, I'll test a small area out of sight and let it dry so we can both see how the surface responds. That takes a few minutes and it's how I avoid surprises."


A Real Situation

Renata's fourth job was a house wash — a two-story home with vinyl siding, quoted at $340.

She had a good machine and she had cleaned concrete successfully. She used the same approach on the siding: a moderately narrow nozzle at moderate distance, working from a ladder for the upper section.

Three things went wrong.

The siding streaked permanently. Working a wand across vinyl at close range leaves visible tracks. Vinyl is soft, and once the pattern is there it does not wash out.

She drove water behind two panels. The homeowner found a damp interior wall two days later.

She was on a ladder with a pressure wand. The reaction force of a wand can push an operator off a ladder — a fact she learned from an experienced operator afterward, having been lucky.

The damage claim was around $2,400 for siding sections and interior drywall repair. Her insurance covered it above a $1,000 deductible.

What she did next:

She learned the soft-wash method properly. Low pressure, appropriate solution, dwell time per label, thorough rinse — and no wand marks because there is no wand pressure.

She bought a dedicated soft-wash setup and stopped using her pressure machine on siding entirely.

She stopped working from ladders. She invested in extension equipment that lets her reach second-story siding from the ground, and for anything beyond that reach she refers the job out.

She added a sentence to every house-wash proposal: "Siding is cleaned by soft washing — low pressure and a cleaning solution. High pressure damages siding and forces water behind panels. We do not pressure wash siding."

That sentence has won her jobs against competitors who quote lower, because customers who have been burned once understand exactly what it means.


How AI Helps

AI is genuinely useful for explaining concepts and organizing your decision-making. It must never give you chemical, pressure, or equipment specifications.

Prompt 1 — Explain the methods to a customer

Write a short explanation I can give a customer who asks me to "pressure
wash" their house.

Explain in plain, non-condescending language:
- The difference between pressure washing and soft washing
- Why siding is cleaned with low pressure and a cleaning solution
- What happens when high pressure is used on siding
- What they should expect to see and hear during a soft wash

Under 140 words. Then give me a one-sentence version to say on site.

⚠ Do not name chemical products, state dilution ratios, dwell times, or
pressure figures. I get those from product labels and my equipment manual.

Prompt 2 — Build a method decision guide

Create a printable decision guide for choosing a cleaning method on an
unfamiliar surface.

Structure it as a sequence: identify the surface, identify the soil type,
choose the gentlest method that could work, test an inconspicuous area,
document existing damage, and stop if uncertain.

For the "gentlest method" step, express the principle as trade-offs between
the four cleaning factors — pressure, flow, heat, and chemistry — and the
rule that increasing chemistry or dwell time allows decreasing pressure.

⚠ Do NOT state specific pressure figures, nozzle degrees, chemical products,
dilutions, or dwell times for any surface. Those come from my equipment
manual, the product label, and testing. Write [PER PRODUCT LABEL] or
[TEST FIRST] where those would appear.

Prompt 3 — Explain equipment terminology

Explain these pressure-washing terms in plain language for a beginner:

PSI · GPM · cleaning units · nozzle degree · orifice size · downstream
injection · dwell time · surface cleaner · buffer tank · pressure loss ·
soft wash · overspray · runoff

For each: what it means, why it matters practically, and one common
beginner misunderstanding about it.

Emphasize the PSI-versus-GPM distinction and why flow often matters more
than pressure for production work.

⚠ Do not state specific numbers for any of these. I will get machine
specifications from manufacturers and match attachments to my actual
equipment.

Common Mistakes

Pressure washing siding. The most common expensive mistake in this trade.

Buying on PSI alone. Flow determines cleaning speed and whether a surface cleaner works.

Using a nozzle orifice not matched to your machine. Damages the pump or produces dangerous pressure.

Working close with a narrow nozzle "to get it clean." That is how etching and striping happen.

Skipping the test area. Two minutes prevents most damage claims.

Guessing at dwell time. It is on the label.

Running chemicals through the pump. Downstream injection exists for a reason.

Not flushing after chemical use. Damages components.

Not testing the water supply. A starved pump destroys itself.

Finishing edges at a different distance than the surface cleaner. That is what produces visible stripes.

Ignoring overspray and runoff until they are a problem.

Working from a ladder with a pressure wand. The reaction force can push you off.


Safety and Professional Considerations

A narrow, high-concentration nozzle is a cutting tool. It will injure skin instantly. Many professionals do not carry the narrowest option at all.

Never point a wand at any person, including yourself. Never use it to clean skin, clothing, or footwear.

Pressure-injection injuries are medical emergencies even when the entry wound looks trivial. Chapter 20, Section 20.2.

Do not operate a pressure wand from a ladder. The reaction force is significant and unpredictable. Use extension equipment from the ground, or refer the work out.

Assume all outdoor electrical is live. Cover outlets and fixtures, and never spray directly into them.

Never mix chemicals, never guess a dilution, and never take chemical guidance from any source other than the product label, the safety data sheet, and appropriate training.

Test every unfamiliar surface in an inconspicuous area and let it dry before proceeding.

Document existing damage before you touch a property. Chapter 12.

Plan overspray and runoff before you start, not after.


Do This Now

  1. Learn your machine's actual PSI and GPM from the manufacturer's specification, and write them on a card in your kit.

  2. Confirm the correct nozzle orifice size for your machine with the manufacturer or a knowledgeable supplier.

  3. Confirm the surface cleaner size your machine's flow can actually run.

  4. Read your equipment manual completely — including the chemical use and flushing sections.

  5. Practice on your own concrete with different nozzles and distances, and observe the results after drying.

  6. Write your house-wash sentence and practice it: "Siding is soft washed — low pressure and a cleaning solution. High pressure damages siding."

  7. Add "test an inconspicuous area" to your job checklist as a required step.


Chapter Summary
